Why Orthodontics?

For most people, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics. Moreover, oral health is a window to your overall health. Orthodontic problems such as misaligned teeth, difficulty chewing, or shifting jaws, should be taken seriously. If left untreated, they could cause health issues down the line like tooth decay, gum disease, abnormal wearing of tooth enamel, etc.

A few things that orthodontic treatment can do for you is

  • Ensure proper biting and function of teeth
  • Create a healthy, attractive smile and facial structure
  • Avoid tooth decay and gum disease by making teeth easier to clean
  • Avoid expensive dental procedures that could result from untreated orthodontic issues

Why a Specialist

Many patients ask our staff why should a specialist in orthodontics "do their braces"? A specialist in orthodontics has not only received a four-year dental degree, but also has completed two to three years of continuous full-time advanced study in an orthodontic residency accredited by the American Dental Association. Dr. Engel and Dr. Alexa are both certified by the American Board of Orthodontists—a significant step beyond the years of advanced education required for a dentist to become a specialist during which they are tested and evaluated by their peers to achieve certification.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable aligners or they may be brackets bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to a corrected position.

This is a great time to wear braces! Technological advances in materials, software, and bracket technology have made the orthodontic treatment process more efficient and more comfortable.

For All Ages

Orthodontic treatment can be as successful for adults as it is for children and adolescents. Orthodontists consider many variables when developing your customized treatment plan, but age is rarely a deciding factor. You are never too old for orthodontic treatment! When you visit Engel Orthodontics, we will identify existing and potential problems and discuss what we can do to correct or improve your condition. We pride ourselves in creating customized treatment plans that you can get on board with!

Duration of Treatment

Treatment time typically ranges from one to two years, depending on the growth of the patient's mouth and face and the severity of the problem. Patients grow at different rates and will respond variously to orthodontic treatment, so the time to case completion may differ from the original estimate. The patient's diligent use of any prescribed rubber bands or appliance is an important factor in achieving the most efficient treatment. Interceptive, or early treatment procedures, usually take from as few as six months to one year.
